Straits Law Practice wins over Court of Appeal in support of ACRES
In a saga that began in September 2006, Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) found its land filled with woodchips that rotted and contaminated the soil and even discharged brackish water. As a result of the unsuitable backfill and material used, the entire AWRC Main Sanctuary Areas consisting of 62 animal enclosures had to be demolished and the unsuitable backfill material excavated.
In 2008, ACRES filed a lawsuit against A n A Contractor Pte Ltd and the Clerk of Works and in 2010, only A n A Contractor Pte Ltd was held liable and was ordered to pay damages.
The Court of Appeal overruled a lower court decision, that the Clerk of Works is not negligent and ruled in favor of the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre. ACRES was represented by Mr. Suresh Nair, Director and Mr. Muralli Raja Rajaram, Senior Associate.
As part of Straits Law’s 10th Anniversary celebration, Straits Law will be donating all legal fees earned from the case to ACRES in support ACRES’ animal protection programmes.
