"An Indian National, in Singapore for the first time, was caught with marijuana at Changi International Airport. He faced a capital charge and we were assigned by the Registrar of the Supreme Court to act for the accused.
In the course of interviewing the Accused, we found out that he had never, prior to this visit, left his village and that he was recruited by a labour agent to work in Singapore. He was asked to carry a briefcase that was to be handed over to the person who will receive him at the airport.
A thorough research with a lawyer contact in India confirmed that the Accused, who comes from a well-regarded family, had never left his village before. Our contact also confirmed that the Agent who had recruited him had disappeared.
Armed with this information, we made representations to the AG Chambers, who after causing an inquiry into the case, withdrew the charge against the Accused."
