Chan Lai Foong : Straits Law Practice

Lai Foong graduated from the University of Hull and was admitted to the English Bar in 1991. She was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 1993. Since then, Lai Foong has been in private practice.

Lai Foong has substantial experience in conveyancing and corporate work. She also has a wide and varied experience in dealing with many local and offshore banks. Lai Foong has also acted for developers in the sale of property in China and Malaysia. In addition She has done civil, criminal and general litigation.
Lai Foong has a strong command of Mandarin and is able to read and write Chinese proficiently. She is also proficient in Cantonese and Hokkein dialects.

She is an avid golfer and an active member of the Law Society Sports Committee.

Most Significant Legal Cases to Date

One of my first deals that I worked on after joining Straits Law was a US$162m syndicated loan to finance oil rigs for a major player in the oil and gas industry. We had promised the banks a very quick turnaround time and achieved that target through proper planning and teamwork. While the slogging and long hours for that period were energy sapping, there was immense satisfaction in marrying the legal drafting with the commercial interests and concerns of the various banks and the borrower. It also made me appreciate the guidance of our Senior Director, Mr. Rajaram and the support of the Straits Law banking team.
