Proceedings were taken out against an old lady and judgment was entered against her, as she did not take any steps to defend the action. Her property, a very valuable piece of land, was put up for auction but she wouldn't do anything because she firmly believed the courts would uphold justice and would in no circumstances act unjustly in taking her land from her. Thus she felt there was no need to defend! On the evening of the eve of the auction, her children cajoled her into finally meeting with me. An application was prepared together with suitable affidavit and an appointment arranged with the Judge to hear the application on a very urgent basis the next day.
However, the old lady would not be hurried! Whilst the Judge was waiting in his chambers, the old lady went over every word of the affidavit with the court interpreter and eventually the matter landed before the Judge with only minutes to spare before the auction was to commence. The Judge made the order for the stay of the auction and the order was conveyed to the auctioneer by telephone. When I told her the Judge has ordered a stay of the auction, she calmly said, "I told you the court would not take away my land."
