Where the gross value of the estate exceeds $3million, the probate matters fall within the jurisdiction of the High Court. Determining the value of the deceased's assets and complying with the formalities of the Estate Duty Act can be a complex exercise, especially where the beneficiaries or next-of-kin have little clue as to the true extent of the assets and liabilities of the deceased.
